What are Sleep Apnea Devices?

Our dentist, Dr. Heggie, at Ivory Dental recommends sleep apnea oral appliances (devices) for patients experiencing mild to moderate sleep apnea.

These oral appliances are very effective at eliminating snoring and treating sleep apnea, a serious medical condition that can impact every aspect of your life.

These oral appliances are an alternative to CPAP therapy, for severe cases of sleep apnea CPAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure Machine) therapy may be required.

SomnoDent® Oral Appliances

SomnoDent, made by SomnoMed, is a sleep apnea oral appliance (mouthpiece) that can prevent snoring and sleep apnea in many patients. SomnoDent is a treatment option that requires the assistance of your dentist to get the ideal jaw position and teeth impression to custom-fit the appliance to your mouth.

How do sleep apnea devices work?

For patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea, using an oral appliance may prove effective in treating the condition. The devices work by moving the lower jaw slightly forward to keep the airway open, preventing sleep apnea.

These devices are made of an acrylic-like substance that is formed by taking an impression of the patient's teeth, which will be done by your dentist.

Wearing an oral device while sleeping may help you breathe better and get a better night's rest without your sleep cycle being disrupted.

Benefits of Using Sleep Apnea Devices

Using an oral appliance to treat symptoms offers several benefits, for patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea. These benefits are:

  • Keeping your airway open while improving sleep quality
  • Eliminating obstructive sleep apnea and snoring
  • Relieving daytime sleepiness and headaches

Patients with severe sleep apnea may require a CPAP device or other treatment.
